A Modern Classic: All I Want for Christmas [25 Days of Holiday Songs]

Welcome to Day 8 of the Challenge! Today’s guest writer is Flick from The Baby Vine. Flick choose a modern classic Christmas song that most will know and love. Click to find out what song Flick choose below.

It’s suffice to say that I love Christmas. I am one of those people who has their tree up in November, busts out the Christmas tunes as early as possible and decorates my home from top to bottom. For me, the Christmas period is about family, giving and most of all, fun. It is the fun part that makes me adore the song ‘All I Want for Christmas’ by Mariah Carey.

It’s upbeat, it’s catchy, and most importantly, it’s fun. We have a tradition in our home that this is the song we play to kick off putting up the Christmas tree. I have a theory that no-one can possibly be in a grumpy mood when listening to this tune. I mean, have you heard it? How could you not have a smile on your face? And while I am not a dancer, I will happily dance along to this song, because I can just be silly with it!

The song itself is sung by Mariah Carey, and she co-wrote it with songwriter Walter Afanasieff. Apparently, it was written very quickly, which is what adds to the appeal. The song is catchy and straightforward! Understandably, it is one of the best-selling Christmas songs of all time. Throughout her career, Mariah Carey sang the song in numerous live TV performances, and today, you’re likely to hear it at least once a day on the radio in the lead up to Christmas (starting November, of course!).

I like this song, but I can only listen to it so many times. I think it’s overplayed, so by mid-December, I’m basically over it.

I love the song “All I Want for Christmas.” It is impossible for me to not just belt it out from the top of my lungs when I hear it. Who cares if I sound like a broken record?

I like slow, meaningful Christmas songs but I also like listening to upbeat tunes like this one from Mariah Carey. This is one of the songs played over and over in the shopping mall near us. I guess it just makes the shoppers happy.

Such a great list. I don’t know why Mariah’s song is the best ever – I can’t help but sing along each and every time. Lol!

  7. Love the playlist! All I Want For Christmas is one of my favorites (and Santa Tell Me). I listen to Mariah Carey’s song the most over Christmas time (and Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped In Red album).
