Get ready to rumble for the Second Battle of the Songs. Since the holiday season is coming up, I thought it would be neat to have a battle with holiday songs. And, what wouldn’t be a perfect battle than a battle of the hearts of teenage girls in the 90s: The battle of boy bands!
Now, I can’t do one battle between all the boy bands of the 90s. That would be impossible. But, for this holiday battle, I picked two famous bands that were the talk of the town when I was in middle school.
That’s right; Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.
*NSYNC – Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays
First off the bat is *NSYNC with their holiday song “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays”. *NSYNC finished 1998 with a bang with the release of their holiday album. That is right, today is the 20th anniversary of the release of “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays”. Don’t you feel old?
The collective vocal sound of *NSYNC has a charming quality. It’s smooth, soulful, and ear-pleasing. Although many have associated this group’s success to Justin Timberlake’s vocals, the truth is, the group’s success wasn’t solely because of him. As you can hear in this song, the reason why *NSYNC had a wonderful sound was that the talent of all the members. I do like Justin’s vocals but I thought Chris Kirkpatrick had the best vocals within the group. Lance, Joey, and JC had wonderful vocal skills too. Each member’s different vocal talent made *NSYNC a unique group with a wholesome blend of soulful, talented, and smooth vocals.
“Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” is a typical late 90s’ boy band song. Some people might like it, some might not. Whether or not you are a fan of boy bands, “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” is a mid-tempo, catchy tune that will make your holidays brighter. You might hum this upbeat tune and dance to it throughout your day or even when you put up the Christmas decorations.
Backstreet Boys – “Christmas Time”
If *NSYNC’s “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” is an upbeat tune that will have you dancing a little bit, Backstreet’s Christmas song will have you do something completely different. “Christmas Time” is a meaningful mid-tempo ballad that will have you think about the true meaning of the Christmas season. Although written about spending Christmas time with your romantic partner, you could replace that thought with spending time with loved ones.
Though the lyrics are a pretty basic, there are good reminders within the different sections of what is the true meaning of Christmas. It never hurts to be reminded of such precious things in our lives with something basic and common. Especially with these lyrics featured in the chorus section:
“Christmas time
Time to share our love
Come and joy
The tidings to the world
Christmas time
The best time of the year
Yes, it’s Christmas time”
“Christmas Time” is a rare track that was featured on the winter pressing of the “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” single as well as two compilation albums in the early 2000s released by Jive Records. And like *NSYNC’s “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays”, “Christmas Time” was released early in Backstreet Boy’s professional careers. So, “Christmas Time” does have that 90s’ boy band sound to it. Yet, what makes this song ear-pleasing is the vocal talent among all the members as well as the soothing and meaningful melodies. “Christmas Time” is a relaxing holiday song that can be played anywhere at any time. But, it will make you think deeply about the Christmas season and have you reminisce about any holiday memories with loved ones.
What Will It Be?

They are both wonderful!

Joy at http://www.thejoyousliving.com
The lyrics are something special! I was a BSB and NSYNC fan growing up but I did see BSB in concert
Im gonna have to go with NSYNC. Only because Im a Timberlake fan 😜
Definitely NSYNC!! They are the best and I always listen to them when I’m decorating the house for Christmas 🙂
I asked my husband which he would pick and he said that he would rather listen to the Backstreet Boys! What?!?! Looks like we are a house divided on this…LOL 🙂
They are amazing! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Can’t believe I’ve never heard either of these songs. 🙂 I go for the slower jam. Backstreet all the way.
Thanks for voting! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I have to go with *NSYNC! Their song just sounded better to me plus I love Justin so yeah lol
He is amazing! What is your favorite Justin album? I love his 2006 album!
Yes, you definitely succeeded in making me feel old! I refuse to believe that that era was actually 20 years ago. Although I was a Backstreet Boys fan back in the day, I think I’m going to have to go with Justin on this one. He’s definitely stood the test of time.
He is amazing! What is your favorite Justin album? I love his 2006 album!
I love Christmas songs so I feel really bad that I don’t think I’ve heard either of these! If you’d have chosen East 17 that would have been my first choice I love Stay Another Day!!
Jess // foundationsandfairytales.wordpress.com
xx
I gotta check out East 17! They weren’t popular in the US!
Yes you have to!!
Awesome post!! I’ve always been a Backstreet Boys kinda girl, so… It’s the Boys for me all the way!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
1000 percent NSync!! Love them and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays is one of my FAVORITE Christmas songs!
It is great! Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Oh my goodness, this has just transported me back to my childhood! Love it! Couldn’t possibly decide though – such fun!
Both are great!
This is wonderful. I love them both! Probably going to go with N’Sync though. I love JT a little more than I used to love Nick Carter. 😉
I loved Aaron Carter when I was in middle school. Isn’t that crazy!
It is going to be Backstreet Boys for me. I loved listening to their songs when I was younger. I am a big fan of their music. I believe I rocked my daughter to sleep with their songs playing in the background. 🙂
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
N*SYNC FOR THE WIN! I never ever liked Backstreet Boys!!
Haha! Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
n’synch is fun and in my head now. #1
:o)
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I think I prefer the Nsync song more. It’s upbeat and festive, and has a great message, even in the music video!
xoxo
Annie
It is great! Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
20 years already? Dear Lord!! As much as I loved NSync, I loved BSB and still love them for nostalgia.
BSB is still great, even today with their new music video. Did you see it?
Backstreet Boys all the way!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I love the Back Street Boys, but this is NSync all the way!
Hahaa! Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Surely East 17 – stay…
All time Xmas boy band song?
Hahaha
I will check this out! I never heard of East 17, they weren’t popular in the US.
I was all about backstreet boys when I was younger so I’d definitely go for them. N Sync were always more of an American thing and weren’t quite as popular in the UK x
It seems the case that NSYNC was an American thing and never got promoted outside of the US. BSB was promoted more. It’s the same in Japan, Japanese who are about my age know BSB but don’t know NSYNC except of Justin.
Haha nice match up! I can imagine hard core boy band fans will come out of hiding for this one. ;p
They will! Fangirls of boy bands still live on!
Aww how to choooooose?! I was always team Backstreet boys back in the day… Gonna stick with them 😛
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Backstreet Boys are untouchable haha!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
It will of course, have to be Nsync!!! I didn’t even know that the Backstreet Boys had a Christmas album. I love Nsync. I’m so sad that they didn’t stay together.
Me either. The thing is “Christmas Time” was only released on a winter pressing of a hit single and was on some compilation albums. BSB did release an Xmas single in 2012.
I love them both and it reminds me of my childhood, although being a major Backstreet Boys fan I have to say they steal it by a pinch!
Haha! I was a fan of both but BSB slightly more as I went to their Black and Blue concert.
NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.. this takes me back! This is a fun duel.. I’m not sure who I would pick. Gotta love the 90’s boy bands!
They are both great!
Nsync all the way! I LOVE that song. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard the Backstreet Boys one!
Haha. Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
90s music is my jam! I am team Nsync all the way!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Wow, it brings back a lot memory from the 90s and they have certainly the sweetest voice. I love it, thanks for sharing.
You are welcome!
Backstreet boys all the wayyyy! Haha
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I have to go with Nsync on this one. Like them both, it reminds me of when my kids were little! Just gotta go with Justin though!
Haha! Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
LOL! Love this. And your right, definitely makes us feel old. Always been partial to the far more up beat NSYNC song to be honest.
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
haha old boysbands memories. I’ve always preferred the backstreet boys!
❤ Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I was always more of a backstreet boys gal, however nsync christmas is probably my favorite christmas tunes of all time!
It is great! Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I’m really into backstreet boys, OMG! I totally missed them. I always love them and their songs.
They are still active! They just released a new music video a couple of weeks ago and they will release a new album next year.
Well, this is easy for me. I have been an N’SYNC* fan-girl, since I was teen. Went to all of their concerts, and stayed at the same hotel as them, which we got to see them walking around. My fondest memories!
Those are great memories!
OMG- LOVE 90s songs. Back street boys was my favorite band!!
❤ Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
He he I remember seeing backstreet boys in Boston clubs back in the 90’s. So fun with the xmas songs
That is awesome you got to see them!
Wow, reading this makes me feel so old. I was exactly 15 years old the first time I’ve heard these songs. I am not going to choose which one is the best for me because both songs are really beautiful and I like it!
They are both great!
Hmm that’s a tough one but I’m going Back Streets Back! Alright! I let them when I was younger! Yup I did!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Ohhh Christmas is so near! Thanks for sharing 90s Christmas songs by the boybands hahaah
You are welcome!
I love this idea. Great throw back to the 90’s. I never can decide on these kind of things.
They are both great!
Backstreet Boys for sure! Haha..Not really a fans of them but I listened to their songs a lot. They are so famous back then!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Excellent battle! Glad to see you joined the other battle of the banders 🙂
Christmas battles are always a bit difficult. I never really did get into the boybands back in the day, but I did listen to their music from time to time.
My vote is for Backstreet Boys.
~Mary
Jingle Jangle Jungle
Thanks for welcoming me!
On the whole, I probably like Backstreet Boys better. But when it comes to these Christmas songs I will have to go with Backstreet Boys as I enjoy their version much better.
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Oh, this brings me back to my middle school days! Boy bands started when I was in 5th grade and my first ever concert was BSB. But, having said that, I’ve always been more of an NSYNC girl myself!
Twenty years ago? It makes me feel older since I kind of felt old when these songs first came out.
This music is not exactly my cup of tea, but it was pleasant enough. My vote goes to the Backstreet Boys–kind of a sweet song.
Arlee Bird
Tossing It Out
Thanks!
I definitely liked the one by ‘NSYNC better than the one by the Backstreet Boys.
Hey, we do Battle of the Bands, too, but you already know that, because you voted in mine…
Thanks, I joined it actually because Mary from Jingle Jangle Jungle invited me!
They’re both so good but N’Sync JUST win it for me!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Oh my gosh blast from the past! Love both songs, but N’Sync definitely gets my vote on this one!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I prefer more traditional sound for Christmas but hate to admit the backstreet boys are slightly better!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I love N*Sync so much. They have always been my favorite. They can do no wrong to me. LOL.
Haha, Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I enoyed both groups growing up but am a huge fan of JT now so I have to go with N*Sync
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
I enjoyed both tunes! I went with some Classic Andy Williams and his Brothers Christmas Music it will post around 10:00 Am tomarrow!
Link it back to me when you do post it! I want to read it!
Backstreet gets my vote on this one
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
The battle is hard, I love them both and simply can’t decide. I am curious to know who will win that battle.
I was definitely all about NSYNC when I was a teenager. I’m decorating for christmas and I know what I’ll be listening to!
Haha, that is great to know. You might start dancing along like NSync too! Every time “Bye Bye Bye” plays, I have to do the dance routine.
Yes battle is really hard.. tough competition I am with NSYNC and now I am waiting for the results
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
This is really tough! I love the NSYNC song though! Brings back the memories 😀
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Both groups sound wonderful and had great success as boy bands. I won’t pick sides on this one. Happy Holidays!
It’s all cool!
I love listening to more meaningful and slow/mid-tempo Christmas songs. It just makes me feel happy to have such a wonderful family to spend Christmas with. With that being said, my vote goes to Backstreet Boys.
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
Oooh I loved both bands when I was a kid (ok, I still do!!) but I would have to give the edge to the Backstreet Boys today!
Thanks for your vote! Check back on Wednesday for the results!
brings back nostalgic memories of grade school and high school
I know, right!
good old songs! I can’t say which is better because they both are!
That is ok to like both!
These are the songs I am going to listen today! Thanks for sharing 🙂
You are welcome! 😀
I love this post!!! For me it has to be backstreet boys all the way 🙂 BackStreets Back for Christmas yayyy xx
Thanks! Check back tomorrow for the results!
This is so much fun! I remember listening to ALL of these as a kid!
You are welcome!
Hi, AMY! It’s good to have you as a new member of ‘Battle Of The Bands’ (aka BOTB). You sure do have a popular blog here with a large following. Obviously you’re doing things right.
As a [Link> “Confident Heterosexual” old guy (Class of ’77), these groups are pretty far afield of my wheelhouse. I’ve heard of both groups before, but not sure I’d ever heard any of their songs… until NOW, that is.
I’m casting my vote for the The Backstreet Boys because I preferred the ballad to the energetic song by Nsync. That first song sounded (to me) like bumper music one would hear when a morning TV talk show is about to go to a commercial break. (Does that make any sense to you? Ha! I’m not sure if anyone would get my meaning there, but contrary to popular belief, I DO know what I’m yakking about… at least 40% of the time. ;o)
I hope you will enjoy being a member of BOTB. It’s a small but pretty eclectic group.

(aka D-FensDogG @ STMcC Presents ‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’)
Thanks for the warm welcome! Haha, you and my dad are the same age and my dad was like “Whatever man, I am just going to let her go and see the BSB”. He said he had a repellant towards screaming fan girls.
I do get the bumper reference!
Well, I guess we all have our own way to celebrate Christmas. *NSYNC – Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays is just too cute! Wow, Timberlake is such a baby here, right! Wow! Thanks for sharing! HUGS
He was! I love his hair back in the day!
Super love your feature re: the battle of songs. It’s really fun and this match up just brought me good memories. I love them both but voting for Backstreet Boys this time. 🙂
Thanks! Check back tomorrow for the results!
I really love them both so it’s really hard to choose between this 2 great groups.
That is ok!
ahhhh, the 90’s. You are speaking to my soul. I, like many other 90’s babies, had a severe infatuation with these boy bands (insert girl scream). NSYNC’s song has always been one of my fave throwback Christmas pop songs, though. So, I have to give it to them.
Great! My inner boy band fangirl is screaming as well. It never dies!
Wow! This is such a blast from the past for me. Growing up, my kids absolutely loved both of these bands and would fight for hours over who was the best and had the better dance moves. I don’t remember which group won!
Ahaha, that was my middle school years!
We don’t hear either of these much in the UK! But I do like the Backstreet Boys’ song so my vote goes with them!
Really? More Blue, 5ive, and others, right? The UK had a lot of boybands in the late 90s.
Gotta give it to NSYNC here. But damn do I feel old. Now it’s stuck in my head. Thanks.
Hahaha, Thanks! Check back tomorrow for the results!
Never was into boy bands, so not sure how to answer this. I guess I like the Backstreet Boys’ song better.
Thanks! Check back tomorrow for the results!
I have always been a die hard fan of Backstreet Boys. So BSB gets one up from me.
Thanks! Check back tomorrow for the results! Who was your favorite member, btw?
Im not overly keen on either but I’ll go with the back street boys as they remind me of being young again!
Im not overly keen on any but I think I will say the backstreet boys as it reminds me of being younger!
I love backstreet boys but when it comes to sentimental and love or Christmas songs, nsync is really my bet. Their voices is really so sweet.
Ah I remember when all the pop artists of the 90s had their Christmas albums. Those songs were always catchy.
I love both of these bands. I have to say the winning song for me is NYSNC’s Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays. That is one of my favorites from the 90’s.
I was a huge fan of NYSNC back in the day. This song is so catchy. Love it.
NSYNC has always been my favorite boy band over the BSB. I have no idea why but I just like their sound better!
I was a huge fan both bands before. But for this I would go with NSYNC, I simply love that song.
This is a hard choice. I loved both groups but I think I think I was a little more in love with NSync because of JT
These are some awesome flashbacks! It’s hard for me to decided on one honestly!
My husband and I are a huge fan of Blackstreet boys. We really love their songs and the beat.
Wow! these songs bring backs memories from my youth! God I am old now!
Obviously I am with Backstreet boys because they rock..
I was OBSESSED with both bands growing up, but N’SYNC will always have a special place in my part because of J. C.’s amazing voice ❤
BSB and NSYNC! hahaha Sorry, I love both boy bands that I can’t possibly pick one. When I was younger, I used to follow their works 😀
My bet is still on Backstreet Boys. Hahahah
Oh my gosh I love boy bands and this post!
My best friend and I were literal teens in the teeny booper era. Nsync Christmas is still my favorite.
I was listening to Backstreet boys in the 90’s. This post brought back old memories.
Oh man, do we have to pick just one?! I actually love both of these songs! I’m interested, however, to see what the final vote decides!
Oh wow, this post really brings me back!
Backstreet boys were my jam back in the day. they are coming together to perform in the big city close to us in September. Can’t wait
O geezzz….blast from the past…..I feel old……but these are good tracks to come back to…..
I will pass on *NSYNC and the Back Street Boys holiday music. I vote for Boys II Men. They hold more records than either in your article and stayed at number 1 longer on the billboards. You can’t deny them especially with the amazing baritone they had. Wish this list was more inclusive and exhaustive.
I love Boys II Men too. I looooooooooooooooooove their first album the most but that is because I am a huge fan of new jack swing. Sadly, this is a battle between two boy groups. I wish I had time to include all the boy bands and their holiday songs but the list would long and take a lot of time.
Girl, I’m sorry that I didn’t get you added to my blog till today, but welcome to the Battle of the Bands!
You’ve got two powerhouse boy bands here, but I gotta give it to Backstreet Boys!
Well done!
Hugs,
Cherdo
OMG these are gold! Gone are the days when new music artists nowadays will sing and released their own Christmas songs.
Backstreet boys….yoooo rock…
Definitely N’sync hahaha. Much better song if I have to pick one
Christmas Time – because my son, who was growing up then, was a big Backstreet Boys fan and even had one of their cassettes.
Brings back lots of old memories
Talk about a blast from the past!! So many fun memories here. I cannot choose one!
I go for NSync!
Smiling like crazy here, you just reminded me of my youth! Oh my gosh another one of your difficult-to-decide-who-to-choose battle! I will go for both!
Backstreet boys for me! I memorized all of their songs. Literally!
I believe the first exposure to every Indian Kid from 90s was the Backstreet Boys. They were kings of Pop, and guess what, they will remain.
I usually prefer more traditional holiday music (loved your post on TSO!). I’d have to go *NSYNC if I had to choose!
So far behind but ‘*NSYNC – I saw them way back when. Who won?
